Further: 

smtp traffic from outside to a crosswire address does work (tested
refdoc at gmx.net -> refdoc at crosswire.org)

reverse does not work. 

Nor does sending of any mails within the server work. i.e. while logged
in refdoc at crosswire.org -> someone_else at crosswire.org

Nor does SMTP login work.
