[sword-devel] Greek accents and quotation marks?

I'm starting a new thread for this topic, which arose in the context of my beta testing the StatResGNT module.

This module makes use of both double and single quotation marks, and in some places the quotations are possibly nested to level 3.

A conflict arises because most front-ends have a UI option for this conf element

> GlobalOptionFilter=UTF8GreekAccents

i.e. They can show/hide the accents.

The problem is that U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK is one of the Unicode code-points covered by that filter!

I think that this is because in some Greek texts, one of the diacritics could be placed after the vowel, rather than over the vowel.
I think it's this one, as described in [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_diacritics#Coronis). Please let me know if I'm on the right track with this.

Coronis

[[edit](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Greek_diacritics&action=edit&section=13)]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Greek_coronis_crasis.svgCoronis, marking crasis in the wordκἀγώ = καὶ ἐγώ

The[coronis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronis_(diacritic))(κορωνίς,korōnís, 'curved') marks a vowel contracted by[crasis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crasis). It was formerly an apostrophe placed after the contracted vowel, but is now placed over the vowel and is identical to the smooth breathing. Unlike the smooth breathing, it often occurs inside a word.

In that description, I assume that formerly, the digitisers would have chosen U+2019 instead of the ASCII apostrophe.

So there's now a conflict of interest arising when a project decides to "retrofit" speech marks into an Ancient Greek text.
If I'm not mistaken, StatResGNT is the first such project ever to do so.

When the Greek accents are hidden by the front-end user, there is no visible ending to a level 2 quotation!!!

What guidance should we give to Alan Bunning & his project team on this ?

Best regards,

David
