[sword-devel] Displaying the chapter and verse in other numbers

That’s the first time I read that SWORD supports Roman numerals. But does it include support for the special Unicode characters for Roman Numerals (eg) U+216C (FIFTY) ?

- Does any front-end make use of this feature?
- Do any of the Sword utilities make use of  it?

Several Unicode scripts have a set of characters for the digits 0-9.

Most of these are for commonly used national languages, etc.

For Thai these are U+0E50 to U+0E59.

I think we need to support such for all the languages that have always featured or later adopted decimal numbering.

I don’t think we need to give any priority to numbers beyond decimal digits.

Admittedly, there are a few scripts that have special characters for other numbers such as TEN to NINETEEN in MEDEFAIDRIN. I see no urgent need to consider these in the context of chapter and verse numbers.

Aside: There are also some ancient scripts such as COPTIC that have EPACT NUMBERS as special characters for (eg) EIGHT HUNDRED. These were included in Unicode 12.0

We are only really interested in enhancing support for those numbers that occur in front-end UIs, namely chapter and verse numbers.

Such numbers need to be parsed by the API and displayed according to a module configuration requirement.
