Strictly speaking   is an example of an NCR ([Numeric Character Reference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeric_character_reference)).
Although an NCR has some similarities to an XML/HTML [character entity reference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_XML_and_HTML_character_entity_references), they are defined differently.
btw. Windows users can readily convert NCRs to Unicode (or vice versa) using the [BabelPad](http://www.babelstone.co.uk/Software/BabelPad.html) Unicode text editor.
Best regards,
David
