The SP module uses the n attribute of the w element as the word number.
Example: IMP format
$$$Genesis 1:1
<w gloss="in_beginnings" lemma="strong:H7225" morph="ב_ראשית" n="1"
xlit="Latn:b_raShit">בראשית</w>
<w gloss="he-created" lemma="strong:H1254" morph="ברא" n="2"
xlit="Latn:bra">ברא</w>
<w gloss="strengths" lemma="strong:H0430" morph="אלהים" n="3"
xlit="Latn:alhim">אלהים</w>
<w gloss="with" lemma="strong:H0853" morph="את" n="4" xlit="Latn:at">את</w>
<w gloss="the_heavens" lemma="strong:H8064" morph="ה_שמים" n="5"
xlit="Latn:h_Shmim">השמים</w>
<w gloss="and_with" lemma="strong:H0853" morph="ו_את" n="6"
xlit="Latn:v_at">ואת</w>
<w gloss="the_earth" lemma="strong:H0776" morph="ה_ארץ" n="7"
xlit="Latn:h_arTz">הארץ</w>
For clarity here, I inserted an EOL before all but one of the w elements.
All but the last has a space after the </w>.
