This should indeed work, even it is a nasty hack.

The  main advantages from my angle are improved validity checking - at
least you get "well formed" info - and the access to osis2mod quite
elaborate debug info.

There is of course a script in sword-tools which makes the imp2osis job
easy (for Bibles at least)
