Just some input on the unicode related discussion.
Here is a very nice url (UTF-8 and Unicode FAQ for Unix/Linux):
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html

It has many useful informations on unicode / utf-8 in general (for total
newbies like
me), but also special development related things. E.g. it discusses the use
of the
glibc utf-8 support (wchar_t) as well as providing information about the
available
free libraries dealing with unicode.
It states there are 2 ways of conversion to unicode support:
a) "soft conversion" - utf-8 internally
b) "hard conversion" - wchar_t internally
Both use uft-8 for in- and output.

Unicode is definitely the way to go.
