Use a different term then. eTerm, for example, is easy to make look cool.

I remember seeing another term (maybe worth resurrecting if I can find it) 
which optionally ran xscreensaver or xlock (can't remember which) hacks as 
the background. Can be a bit CPU intensive but hacks like pyro looked really 
nice. And rocks -move -rotate quickly made one giddy.
