As a part of his conversion of SFM files to USFM files Charles Houser
has identified the following cases. I believe that two of them pose
cases we have not addressed in a standardized fashion regarding how to
encode them in OSIS. (Note: I am not trying to solve or address any of
the potential SFM or USFM issues ONLY how these cases should be encoded
in OSIS.)
Following is the text I got from Charles. I have grayed the items that
I believe are currently well solved with OSIS.
Contemporary English Version
Special text types
The CEV has a number of text elements within the running Scripture text
that need to be set in fonts and sizes distinctive from Scripture text
itself. [Examples shown here emulate the typographical treatment used in
the standard "easy reading" typesetting of the CEV.]
Section heads
Example: The Story of Creation [at Gn 1.1]
Note: This is the most prevalent type of head found in
the CEV; these are sometimes followed by parallel passage
cross-references.
Book subdivision heads
Examples: BOOK I [at Ps 1.1]
BOOK II [at Ps 42.1]
Note: These are only found in Psalms; they are always
followed by a Book Subdivision Descriptor Head.
Book subdivision descriptor heads
Examples: (Psalms 1-41) [at Ps 1.1]
(Psalms 42-72) [at Ps 42.1]
Note: These are only found in Psalms; they always
immediately follow Book Subdivision Heads.
Numbered subsection heads
Examples: -1- [at Pr 22.22]
-2- [at Pr 22.24, etc.]
Note: These are only found in Proverbs.
Discourse unit heads
Examples: The First Speech: Moses Reviews the Past [at end of Dt
1.1-5 unit]
The Second Speech: Moses Tells What
the Lord Demands [at Dt 4.44-46]
The First Vision [at 2 Esd 3.1]
The Second Vision [at 2 Esd 5.20]
Additional Words from Ezra [at 2 Esd
15.1]
Note: I would recommend that the following section heads
be changed to this kind of head: Sermon on the Mount [at Mt 5.1]; A Song
Praising Israel's Ancestors [at Sir 44.1]; The Prayer of Azariah [at Pr
Az 1]; The Song of the Three Hebrews [at Pr Az 28]; A Contest [at 1 Esd
3.1]; and possibly others.
Literary subunit heads
Examples: The First Day [at Gn 1.3]
Towns from Ephraim, Dan, West
Manasseh [at Js 21.20-26]
Warriors from the Benjamin and Judah
tribes [at 1 Ch 12.16]
Job's First Speech [at Job 3.1]
Eliphaz Continues [at Job 5.1]**
Job's Reply to Eliphaz [at Job 6.1]
Part One: The Four Kings and Their
Successors [at Dn 11.2]
Note: **I think a case can be made for redesignating the
headings in Job, such as "Eliphaz Continues" and "Job Continues His
Prayer" [Job 14.1], as Supplied Attributions (see below), since they do
not actually signal a new literary unit. Their actual function is to
remind the reader who is speaking. If such a change is effected, these
heads should be repositioned below the section heads.
Scriptural superscription
Examples: [A psalm by David for the music leader. Use stringed
instruments.] [at Ps 4.1]
Note: These are only found in Psalms.
Parallel passage cross-references
Examples: (Deuteronomy 1.9-18) [at Ex 18.13]
(Luke 2.1-7) [at Mt 1.1-7]
Note: Always positioned immediately below
section heads.
Supplied attributions
Examples: The Lord said: [at Ex 21.12, 22.1, 16,
etc.]
The Lord told Moses to say to the
people: [at Lv 16.29]
She speaks: [at Sgs 2.1; 2.3]
He speaks: [at Sgs 2.2]
Jerusalem speaks: [at Lm 1.11, 18]
Solomon continues praying: [Ws 10.1,
15, etc.]
The Letter Continues: [2 Macc 1.23]
Ezra said: [1 Esd 8.91]
Note: See Style Directives for CEV, section XIII.C. for
further explanation and caveats.
Textual placards
Example: I AM THE GREAT CITY OF BABYLON,
THE MOTHER OF EVERY IMMORAL
AND FILTHY THING ON EARTH. [at Rev
17.5]
Alternate text titles
Examples: Addition B [at Gk Est 13.1]
End of Addition B [at Gk Est 13.7]
One Old Ending to Mark's Gospel [at
Mark 16.9]
Note: In the current editions of CEV the Greek Esther and
Mark headings receive different typographical treatments; I recommend
that they always be treated the same within any single edition. [csh]
