jip is another alternative, just for a quick look.  It's pretty easy to use.

If you use do something like the following to your jvm commandline...
-javaagent:profile.jar -Dprofile.properties=profile.properties

http://jiprof.sourceforge.net/

If I recall correctly, YourKit is supposedly pretty good.  But, jip 
would allow anyone doing just one off development on jsword to take a 
look.  I don't think YourKit is going to provide licenses to anyone but 
the "core" devs.
