Daniel,
The "space" bar acts as a pause toggle for auto scroll. In the menus
under "View/Scroll" you will see the 3 actions and their shortcuts. The
shortcuts can be changed using "Settings/Config".
As for Retina, I suspect the newer versions of Qt are the source of the
improvement.
