Summary: Entering Invalid reference does nothing

Initial Comment:
Entering an invalid reference should, from a 
usability perspective, either

1)Go to the next nearest entry (in the case of say 4 
john)

2)go to the first or last reference in the entry

3)Throw an error

Currently it sits there and does not indicate to the 
user at all that the reference is in error and that 
is why no action is taken.

Personally I would say the ideal method is to do #1 
if possible and #2 if not
