I use 2.96 on my mandrake 8.0 box thats probably why you get some of
the strange error messages that you do. As I understand it it's not
broke like redhats version and the main reason that it gives more
errors is that it is more standards compliant. The reason most people
complain about it is because they would rather blaim the compiler than
fix thier buggy code. Not being a c programer I can't say tis from
experiance. It's just what I've heard. Also from what I've heard the
compiled product is better, And from a few posts from alen cox, he says
that atr least from about a month ago that 2.96 is all he uses to
compile his kernels with.
