I had a look in the forum of Slackware.com.
There were different solutions posted for this problem:

The first solution is to execute the following command before running "make 
-f Makefile.cvs".
	export M4="m4 --nesting-limit=500"
I hope this works. Could you please test this?
(This solution did _not_ work on my side with an (for testing) installed 
autoconf 2.5).

The second solution is installing autoconf 2.13 (e.g. from an older Slackware 
version like 7.1.)

1.5.2 is enough for the current HEAD branch. On BibleTime sourceforge page 
should be some information in the documentation section how to get Sword's 
CVS.
