Dear CrossWire fellow volunteers,
As you probably know, we've been slowly migrating to RHEL7 by hosting a
guest RHEL6 VM. We've moved much of our services off the VM and onto
the host, but one large service I've been avoiding is email. I've been
formulating a plan and hope to move this forward soon. Here's is what I
need from you.
1) if you have suggestions to improve this plan, please let me know
2) I will look for all current /home/*/.forward files and migrate them
to the new server. If your email is not residing on our server because
you are forwarding it to another server, this should take care of you.
3) I will look for all /home/*/.ssh/authorized_keys* files and move them
to the new server. If you have an account on our server which you ssh
into, then this should give you the same access to login to your account
on the RHEL7 host.
4) I will setup a mail system (probably exim again, per Daniel Glassey's
recommendation, but will do some brief reading to see if there is any
case to be made for a better option) and mailman on RHEL7 and create a
test list which we can try.
============
At this point, you should be able to receive emails on the new server
using one of the many hostnames which point to the new server, e.g.,
git.crosswire.org
If you are storing your mail on crosswire's server via IMAP, you should
be able to establish a new IMAP connection to the new server and copy
any folders you'd like to keep over to the new server. Or you can also
do this via scp if you have an account.
You should also consider cleaning up your home folder and move what you
want to keep over to the new server.
============
5) We will lock and attempt to migrate mobile-devel (a list to which I
don't anticipate traffic) to the new listserv service, including
archives and user list.
6) Once we feel good about our ability to migrate a list, we will set a
time for us to make the switch, which will entail:
7) Bring down mailman on RHEL6, migrating all lists to the new server.
8) Change vanity name crosswire.org to point to the host instead of the
guest.
At this point we will see what we missed! :)
Please let me know your thoughts,
Troy
