Have a look at

http://activemq.apache.org/discussion-forums.html

http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/nabble-mailing-list-interface/

there are others, some with big names, who use this kind of
integration.

Here is a review, which lists a fair bunch of features we could get for
free this way

http://www.forum-software.org/nabble/review

The overall outcome is

1) Those who prefer fora will post on there, think they are on a forum
etc, while those of us who prefer emails will not ever need to consider
that they interact with a forum - and yet interaction is seamless. I
think this will lead to massive increase in usefulness of our fora.

2) no or minimal admin extra work. Instead of worrying about keeping
more balls in the air we can abrogate responsibility for one subset of
our admin workload.

there are other ways to achieve the same aim:

Drupal has a forum bit which can be easily joined up to mailing lists:

https://drupal.org/node/40777

Incidentally, Drupal can be run on Tomcat, either directly with a
php/java bridge or via Quercus.

https://groups.drupal.org/tomcat-and-other-java-containers

The advantage of this is still (1) above, but (2) falls away - we have
an new framework to take care of, instead of mvnforums. The advantage
here is that Drupal is well supported and could be offering us benefits
over our current, creaking website. And it offers other plugins which
might be of use. E.g. Facebook/forum/email integreation.

All in all I would suggest that we investigate forum/mailing list
integration a bit more, before we commit to a rash new choice.

Peter
