This error message is basically saying that the remote mailserver

doing whatever it does to verify email recipients, in this case, you, 
scribe at crosswire.org .

Maybe that mailserver is having a hard time checking crosswire.org DNS?

I'd check whether we see that "Timeout trying verify RCPT" in 
crosswire.org mail logs... but I still can't read /var/log/maillog* on 
crosswire.org (even though I can now read /var/log/exim/* -- thanks).

Also, look at the (free, unlike some of the other DNS checking services 
which are now subscriber only) DNS report from
http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx?domain=crosswire.org&detailed=1 
which may point to two issues worth fixing (an NS record may be missing, 
and mailhost.extremezone.com apparently not accepting email for 
crosswire.org).  The second of these is potentially email-losing... is 
*that* what the remote mailserver in this incident ran into?

Since it doesn't look like crosswire.org runs its own DNS server(s), I'm 
not going to ask for access to your named.log files :)
