Xiphos knows nothing of the "C" locale. Typical default in a US system 
would be:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

I am ... surprised ... that your system defaults at any time to a locale 
which is not a real locale.
That is to say, "C" is sort of the null locale, where strings are 
handled the most simplistically, i.e., no processing or translation.
