I know what a pericope is in general; as it was mentioned, I thought you
were asking about some software by that name.

Bible modules are created from source texts which have varying amounts
of markup which may include section headings and introductory material,
as well as footnotes, cross references, Strong's references, morphology,
and lemmas. It depends entirely on which module you're using. Xiphos
enables display of headings by default, and that includes intro material
if present.

The ESV module (no longer distributed, regrets) has such introductory
material at the beginning of each book. I'm not sure how much of that
kind of material is in other Bible modules.

It's entirely up to the module creator, as to how much of such material
exists.

Module creation details are best discussed on the Sword mailing lists
<https://crosswire.org/pipermail/>. Xiphos is just one of the many Sword
applications that use these modules.
