Ah, something one of you said triggered a thought:

I use the JWM window manager. I also have Compiz/Emerald installed, and XFCE.

I logged out of JWM, and into Compiz. ALL THE COLUMNS ARE THE SAME.
I then logged out of Compiz and into XFCE. ALL THE COLUMNS ARE THE SAME.

So, it's an odd JWM issue.
(Oh, and to make things weirder, I logged BACK into JWM... and ALL THE COLUMNS ARE THE SAME.)

So, basically... never mind. Thanks!

Well, from the category "Works fine on my system", I'm using Xiphos 4.1.0
on Centos 7, compiled myself, and when I put 3 or 4 translations into a
parallel window (or tab) I see all translations appear to be the same
width. stretching or shrinking the window makes no obvious difference.
I'm using the Mate Desktop, in case that makes any difference. But I
suspect it may be something that Karl has fixed in the interim.
