I use a fairly excellent tool for preventing spam on my blog called Akismet. I just looked and there is no plugin for it for MediaWiki. However, there appears to be a fairly successful anti-spam plugin called Bad Behavior available that might be worth looking into.

Found this:<br><a href="http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_Features" target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)">http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_Features</a><br><br>Though, if you read the top of that page, it has a comment:
<br><b>This page <a href="http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:MetaProject_to_transfer_content_to_MediaWiki.org" title="Meta:MetaProject to transfer content to MediaWiki.org" target="_blank" onclick="return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)">

<br><br>There's also this, which I think might be worth reading:
