<h3>Preamble</h3>
<pre>
With the recent release of 1.5.5, we've made some big steps in regard to
functionality that we can provide. Functionality, in general, is
limited by the quality of texts that we can offer to our users.
We've completed a new tool to allow volunteers to 'markup' texts more
richly, so that we might increase the quality of information we can
provide to students of the Bible.
Currently, there is no <b>free from restricted use</b>, English Bible NT
sync'd to the original Greek. For our first new text project, we're
starting a KJV / Textus Receptus parallel text which will be placed into
the public domain upon completion. There are many Bible projects that
will be able to take advantage of this work, and we will be able to do
some really neat stuff in our project once this data is available to us.

<h3>What You'd Need To Do</h3>
<pre>
A volunteer will be presented with the translated text, the Greek text,
and tags in the translated text that represent each word in the Greek
text. The volunteer will then be allowed to place the Greek tags around
the word or phase that represents the translation for that Greek word.
Please download and try a copy of the editing tool and see if this
project is something to which you might be able to contribute.
After trying, if you feel that you would be willing to commit to
complete 1 or 2 books of the New Testament BEFORE JAN 1, please review
the <a href="status/">status</a> page and find something available,
then email <a href="mailto:kjv2003@crosswire.org">kjv2003@crosswire.org</a> and pledge your intentions.
Our goal is to finish this first project by Christmas and release in time
for New Years.
Please only consider yourself able to do this work if you've had, at
least a basic, Koine Greek class at some time in your life.

<h3>Instructions</h3>
<pre>
You'll need a jdk from Sun. I'd recommend 1.4.1 from:
<a href="http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/download.html">Java JDK 1.4.1 Download</a>
The full SDK download is fairly large (~40megs). The JRE download is much
smaller (~9megs) and will be fine, unless you'd like to play around with
the source code for the ModEdit tool, and then you will need the SDK.
The latest version of the app is located at:
<a href="/~scribe/ModEdit.jar">ModEdit.jar</a></b> - Remote client
and may be downloaded to your computer and executed with a command like:
java -jar ModEdit.jar
or under windows, you might be able to just double-click the jar file.
If you are interested, the source code is available at:
<a href="/~scribe/ModEdit-src.jar">ModEdit-src.jar</a></b> - SourceCode for ModEdit Java client.
You won't need to login to play around-- only to save, so don't worry
about trying to login.
Tags or Greek words may be selected by clicking on them.
After selecting a tag, you may either drag it where you would like it,
then click on the tail and size it accordingly (remember you must single
click once before dragging), or
<b>I find it easier to use the keyboard to place and size tags:</b>
left, right, space, up, down should all be recognized, and a
little playing will give you an idea of how they're supposed to work.
Play around freely, as the text will not be changed unless you have
been issued a login and password.
</pre>
<h3>Standalone</h3>
<pre>
If you aren't connected to the internet on a constant basis, you may wish
to use the 'standalone' client. The initial download is a little larger,
but includes all you'll need to markup the text offline. The download is
here:
<a href="/~scribe/ModEdit-standalone.tar.gz">ModEdit-standalone.tar.gz</a></b> - Standalone client.
This download is a 'tar.gz' file which is a standard 'zip' file on most UNIX
systems. Don't fear, most Windows unzippers will be able to handle this file
just fine.
After downloading and unzipping this file, there should be a new directory
called: ModEdit located where you unpacked the file. <b>If you are running
Windows, you will also need to download the following 2 files into your
ModEdit directory:</b>
<a href="/~scribe/modedit.exe">modedit.exe</a></b> - Windows agent needed for standalone client to run on Windows.
<a href="/~scribe/swicu20.dll">swicu20.dll</a></b> - Support DLL needed for standalone client to run on Windows.
You may then run the app just like the remote client-- either double-click
the ModEdit.jar file located inside the ModEdit directory, or from a command
prompt, type: java -jar ModEdit.jar
Periodic snapshots of your work may be exported by setting your export range
to somethine like: Heb 1-5 then hitting the [Export] button. A file will be
created for you called 'export.zip' containing the export range specified, and
this file may be emailed to: <a href="mailto:kjv2003@crosswire.org">kjv2003@crosswire.org</a>.
If there is an updated version of the program available, you may download
<b>only</b> the ModEdit.jar file and place it into your ModEdit directory.
These files are the same for both the online and offline clients.
<i>If you unpackage a new ModEdit-standalone.tar.gz file over your existing
version, your local text edits will be lost.</i>

your contribution to this project, then you'll have helped no less than
any other!
