First, thanks to all of you who responded - especially David. I
apologise for cross-posting, but it doesn't seem appropriate to post as
a bug at the moment.

I've been a while answering because I've been looking for an xml
validation tool that gives the kind of output that you posted. Notepad++
looks great, but is Windows only. I've tried Kate - it has an xml
validation plugin that uses libxml for validation. Kate does not see
items such as '\vp 36) \vp*' as a problem. There is no suggestion in the
usfm manual that suggests that the construct is not valid either.
However, I replaced all instances of ') \' with ' \' and ran
usfm2osis.py on the file. I had also matched the unmatched '/it' tag
mentioned earlier. usfm2osis.py showed no syntax errors. Using osis2mod
on the generated osis file gives the same problems as before.

All the problems seem to be where I've used the '\vp' tag. I've attached
part of the osis file for the beginning of 1Ki:3 The resulting module
shows nothing before verse 2. The same process using usfm2osis.pl
renders this and other chapters OK. I suspect that there is a problem in
the way in which the python utility handles the '\vp' tags. I made quite
heavy use of them in this book. Any suggestion on my next stage? For
now, I'm back to using the perl tool.

God bless, Barry.
