Mobipocket was acquired by Amazon a while back, so the MOBI format now
forms the basis of the Kindle native format. (They have since created
some more interactive formats, specifically targeting tablet-based
reader software that would support sound, animation, color, etc.)
Basically, the format is HTML. If you have a Kindle, you can email an
HTML file to your account at Amazon and they'll convert it and send it
directly to your cloud account.
MOBI is very similar (from the e-book creator's perspective at least) to
EPUB. I have a bit of experience in generating MOBI/EPUB from XML, and
specifically convert TEI to EPUB with XSLT and then convert EPUB to MOBI
via Calibre. To convert OSIS to MOBI, I would probably choose to convert
the OSIS to TEI to EPUB to MOBI.
