IIRC this has been supported in WebKit since before there was a WebKit. 
Bibletime used to use KHTML which is the technology that Apple forked to 
make WebKit with and we've had those selectors for a few years now. And 
IIRC, again, but :before and :after were in CSS2 just not as widely 
supported until more recently.
