I can only offer a user's point of view.

Very slow to load, very bloated. Open office Calc takes up to 184 seconds to
open an excel sheet that requires 1 second on Excel 2003, on a 3ghz
hyperthreading pentium. The office writer application takes 37,660KB (37
megabytes) to load up in. ( http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=119 )

Google is planning to do some hiring for engineers to work on open office.

Sun is working with Google on other things also, in the Java area.

I think that the landscape may change before such a project would be
completed, but I'm not sure.

2.0 is very compliant with Microsoft Office for those that have heavy duty
machines.
