The screen readers that I have seen and heard do pretty well with standard English most of the time. For example, if a pop-up dialog box appears with the label "Text to find:" and an edit control, the computer might announce "Dialog box. Text to find. Text entry box." Really complicated dialogs and novel graphical layouts get much harder to understand when read by a screen reader.

Something else to consider is a simple interface to select the desired chapter or even verse from MP3 audio files. (http://ebible.org/webaudio/)
