It gives them a stronger hand if they ever go after someone in court. They
could wait and register later but could end up with a smaller club to hit
infringers with.

I don't think that means it could not also be registered in other countries.

Maybe. It is hard but not impossible to have a judgement against you from a
country you have no presence in.

I think we will see laws preventing the extraction of (but not the remaking
of) sweat-of-the-brow stuff for purposes that damage a market for the work
that contains the stuff. I believe some other countries already have laws
of this sort.
