I put Opera on my box as well as Netscape and IE for just such an instance. 
If you install the absolute minimum of Opera - no Java, no plug-ins - no 
add-ins, then it won't try to display files it thinks it understands.  It 
will simply do the download.  OTOH I wish people would zip files up that 
they want me to download: never a problem then.
