In most XML representations for identifiers there is an identifier value
that is the string token that computers use to uniquely identify the
_subject_ and then one or more _presentation_ and language oriented
values that would likely be presented to the end user. Topic Maps and
UDDI being two excellent examples.
In our own mechanism for scripture references we have a structure that
is not what would be presented to an end user (Matt.1.1 would likely be
converted to Matt 1:1 or Mateous 1:1 or another language dependant value
when presented to the user).
I submit that:
1) In the XML context that we are working in, identifier values that
include whitespace will encounter more problems that the fact that they
can't exist as values in an xsd:list.
2) The longer term perspective will be that identifiers will be defined
with _presentation_ alternatives. (I believe within the next 12 months
for Strong's numbers.)
