Sorry, not "name." Originated in TEI land as a way to denote the 
paragraph or note number that appeared in an original document. Useful 
for cases where you want to auto-number lists and such for display but 
want to retain the numbering as observed in an original.

Will try to remember to look in the TEI archives for any specific 
discussion of it.
