I thought we had nuked word as being hard to define consistently
(especially across languages). I also thought we had always had
functional syntax, like
@char(45)
@string(hi there)
I prefer the functional syntax mainly because it makes it clear how
to have a multi-argument grain (like char(45, 10) to get length --
which would be nice). It also would let us make the syntax in all
three parts parallel.
