The reason to add it is because SWORD can add a new versification and people can be running an old application that does not have that v11n.

When the v11n is not supported but used by the application, it could mean that the module returns wrong/surprising results. I think that an unsupported module should be ignored by the application (in exactly the same way that a partially installed module shouldn't be used.)

Imagine a v11n that has an entirely different book order (e.g. authored date order). Or one that has extra content early on (e.g. puts the non-canonical books before Genesis.) These would never return useful results when interpreted with any other v11n. These are extreme made up examples that won't happen just to clarify the problem.

Secondly, with the versification not being defined Versifications.instance().getVersification(String v11nName) will return null. There is every reason to expect this to be different than the KJV v11n.

Currently, BibleDesktop shows unsupported modules in its installer and (IIRC) does not allow them to be installed. It doesn't give any reason that it is not supported.

I have been thinking about adding a getUnsupportedReason() to the BookMetaData. I was thinking that this would return a non-localized string. The same that is written to the log.

Some reasons in the past for unsupported modules:

Module is encrypted and JSword did not have decryption code.

Module is compressed with LZSS.

Module is a Personal Commentary

Module is a GenBook.

Current reasons:

Module's conf lacks some critical entry that prevents it from working. E.g. DataPath.

Module is a VerseTreeKey, that is has a ModDrv that JSword does not implement. (SWORD defines this but there are no modules like this)
