<p>It wouldn't take a huge amount to push that down to a backend, so that backends can get whole passages in one go. I guess the first lookup would be easy, just increasing the block size. The second indirection we would want to be cleve, in that it is likely that all the blocks are located side-by-side.</p>
<p>But even if we didn't push the loop down, we could still be more clever than we are now. At the moment we cache the last block only. We could read bigger chunks and cache those. So, say read 60 blocks or something. </p>
