Hi DM,

In Java 5, double checked locking is safe if done correctly. We should remove this as a warning from Checkstyle, and add the findbugs rule (if we really want something) to ensure that when it is present, it is implemented correctly.

HOWEVER, I would rather doubly initialise than introduce synchronization. Synchronization is relatively slow and can prevent multi-threaded environment. At the moment, I believe I am the only one to be building a concurrent system, and so my preference would be to go for the naive approach of checking whether a variable is instantiated and if not, to instantiate it.

public void init() {
Var var = getMyVar();
if(var == null) {
var = new Var();
}
return var;
}

In a single threaded environment (like most start-up phases) this is never going to be an issue. The times where we doubly initialise will only happen to me and I'd prefer that to synchronization.
