Perhaps, certainly 27MB is something we could live with (building 
scripts probably need to be updated), but OTOH just splitting by the 
current subdirectories (if sensible) could be very easy, so the 
migration doesn't have to be done twice.

But yes, just switch to git would be worthy of the effort.
