Thanks for the links. I guess they must have been tearing their hair
out about it!
So do you think it is worth us editing the jar file?
I can't help thinking that either way is a hack and so long as it
comes into the category "ugly but self contained", I'm tempted to
leave it as it is because it works and the alternative doesn't have
any tangible advatages.
Unless I'm missing something.
Joe.

In the BugParade there are bug reports for the problem:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4739089
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4785851
tar.jar has a Manifest.mf
Also, this is a good forum discussion of the problem:

You may need to join in order to see these.

I'm fairly sure this will be because you are using JDK 1.4.1. I think
JDK 1.4.2 will fix this problem - I suppose your only need to download
the JRE. I just tried to update the webstart config files to specify
1.4.2 or greater but you can't go to that depth in the "version"
attribute. I've added a note to the download page. Joe <snip> I got it
this morning at home. IBM's JWS claims it has no updates available,
but the JWS at home did the trick. The search function works as
expected - much better! :) That's the way we users like it! Gotta run,
