Mostly we have only bugfixes in master right now: no new features or
improvements. I'd release 2.8 if we had at least 2-3 user-visible new
features or major improvements to show. Otherwise I'd just release a
bugfix release 2.7.3 also to show the community that do we care about
fixing bugs long term and that we are not dead. For non-bugfix releases
like 2.8 I fear that people would think "Wow! A new release! I'm so
excited to see what's new." and then be disappointed finding out that
not much has actually changed.
To sum up, I'd prefer to merge (or cherry-pick) master into bugfix-2-7
and release 2.7.3 with a big notice about prior versions which might in
some cases delete users' home directories.
Best regards,
Jaak
