I noticed this issue while trying to build bibletime-1.6.5 with gcc-4.3 .
I believe there is a problem with the way the configure script is generated
causing it to slightly differ from what's in sword.m4. In sword.m4, the
conftest code that checks for sword has on its line 115;
'int main(int argc, char* argv[]) {'
that somehow wrongly changed in line 32785 of the configure script to;
' int main(int argc, char* argv) {'
causing the test program to fail while detecting current sword version.

Okay, I figured this one out.
I installed libcurl4-openssl-dev and the configure worked fine.
This bug report can now be closed. Sorry to inconvenience you with this
report.

Probably only the last line is relevant:
checking for installed Sword version... configure: error: Failed to
compile
the test program to check the Sword version! Please have a look at
config.log! Report this to the BibleTime developers!
You can look at sword.m4 if you find out something. There is a small c++
program there which the config system tries to compile with g++. I can't
help more ATM but please tell if you find any new information.
