If compiling the Sword library is problematic - and even if it's not -  
you might prefer using the packages in  
http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/ if you find them for your  
machine architecture and OS version. I installed it for x86/Kubuntu  
8.10 and it worked fine.
