Thank you Gabriel for your words of wisdom, it worked! It made perfect sense 
to me the way you explained it, and equally important, it built!

I have corresponded with the maintainer of clucene, and a PR has been 
submitted to change the way clucene is built.

With God's help, the latest versions of sword and bibletime will be 
committed to the ports tree in time for FreeBSD 6.2 due out next month.
