The CLucene index is quite powerful. You should be able to do things like 
"(inst*) AND (strongs:H1234)". There's also a link which explains all of it.
There's a help button next to the edit which explains it a bit.

Hm, which Lucene do you use?
Did you build BibleTime from the latest sources? Things change more often atm.
