Sorry the system doesn't have to be whithout kde but the compile time option 
is still there to compile the kde and qt libs staticly. This is needed for 
systems that may not have the correct libs. This is a good option but kde 
would still need to be there. I still need this to make the staticly compiled 
version for troy.

Oh the globals.conf is used by sword. Not sure exactly what it does but if 
it's not there and your modules are installed in your home directory it won't 
find them. libsword needs this file for some reason. Normally on a system 
wide install of the modules this whould not matter but is needed for an 
install in the users home directory.
