This sounds again like a problem with KDE's environment variables. What value 
do $KDEDIR andf $KDEDIRS have in your environment?

> Anyone have any suggestions as to where I could look to fix this (or, if it

The most time we had this problem it was a problem with  the KDE settings 
mentioned above.
